Abstract
Soils swelling behavior is one of the most damaging geohazard in the world. It can cause engineering problems such as damage to foundations, buildings and infrastructure. The prediction of this type of soilis a very complex issue that depends on geological, environmental and structural factors alongside many others. Classical statistical methods adopted to predict vertical movements of soils require numerous long and expensive experiments. This paper explores the effects and interactions of clay content and plasticity index factors on the swelling potential and pressure estimates. The analysis was conducted using Taguchi’s L9 (32) orthogonal array, and back-propagation ANN was used to complete the design. Results indicate that integrating the Taguchi method and the network (ANN) approach is very efficient and accurate in predicting soil swelling as well as determining the effects and optimal conditions of different parameters. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the proposed integrated approach indicated that the plasticity index significance is about 91.66% and 95.77% respectively, for the estimation of swelling potential and swelling pressure.
